The scholarship pageant offers young women the chance to win prizes and to be awarded thousands of dollars. Through Kaela’s planning for the event, to her poise and presence on the stage and off, she took home over $1500 in scholarship prizes. She is the daughter of John and Kim Gardner of Rockford.
Contestants are judged on swimsuit, evening gown, talent, and interviews. Each category represents a certain percentage toward the overall scoring by the judges. The list below shows respectively what each aspect of the show represented: Private Interview -25 percent, On-Stage Interview - 5 percent, Lifestyle and Fitness in Swimsuit -15 percent, Talent - 35 percent, Evening Wear - 20 percent.
Kaela’s personal interview with the judges about her Platform Issue on Volunteerism earned her the scholarship prize for top interviewer.
This year’s talent portion brought vocals like operettas, tap and jazz dancing, and piano playing. Miss Gardner, sponsored by Community First Bank & Trust, sang “Gold”. Her stage presence put her at the top with Erica Gelhaus who sang Saper Vorreste by Verdi from the Masked Ball.
Throughout the evening, between categories, the audience was entertained by Miss Lake Representative 2005, Sarah Garman, performers Jeff and Sarah Tackett who was a former talent award winner of Miss America Pageant and Miss Ohio 1989, and Marissa Minor 2004 Lake Festival Queen. Former Pageant winners were recognized; Abby Bollenbacher Lake Festival Queen 2001 attended as a former winner and as one of Kaela’s supporters, friend, and coach.
Sarah Garman Miss Lake Representative 2005 said her farewell and the winners were announced. She made it clear in her final send-off that every contestant was a winner for coming forward to participate in the Miss Lake Festival Scholarship Pageant.
The event culminated with photo opportunities for the Winner Erica Gelhaus , 1st Runner up Kaela Gardner, 2nd Runner up, Brigitte Hart and 3rd Runner up, Heather Waterman.
